Thoracic surgery (also called "cardiothoracic surgery" and "cardiovascular and thoracic surgery") deals with surgery of the chest cavity containing the heart, lungs, and esophagus.

• Years of training required - Two years after successful completion of a five year general surgery residency. There are a very small number of positions offered in a six year Integrated Pathway for direct application from medical school.
• Fellowship . One year fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery following completion of a residency in thoracic surgery.
